Tradeoffs and tensions

Photography's history is not a clean progress narrative. Each transition discarded something real.

The daguerreotype produced images of extraordinary tonal resolution — fine enough that daguerreotypes photographed through modern macro lenses reveal details invisible to the naked eye at the time of exposure.
